February is nearly upon us and that means that events are in full swing for all of the Visual and Performing Arts Departments here at Marygrove College.

The Gallery and The Beyond Words Gallery both are featuring instillation by three Michigan based artists – Mark Rumsey, Ann Chuchvara, and Maureen Nollette. “Working Towards Invisible” opened on Sunday January 22, and features work that is concerned with the action of making, as well as the temporary nature of the work itself. Dogman’s Last Stand, a performance by the University of Detroit Mercy Theatre Company, is about a laid off factory worker coming to the defense of his canine companion after a run-in with a local “punk”. The play will be performed in the Marygrove Theater. The play runs Fridays and Saturdays, February 3, 4, 10, 11 at 8 pm and Sunday February 5, 12 at 2 pm. At the Sunday February 5 performance there will be a talkback with the audience.

On Tuesday, February 21 at Noon, Glen Holcomb, a Marygrove music alumnus, will present a short recital of beautiful spirituals, complimented by stories of the history and hidden meanings behind these African-American cultural treasures. Getting Started, the annual winter dance concert performed by the Marygrove College Dance Company II, will have three performances on February 24 and 25. Their concert will feature guest choreography by Patti Obey, Kim Bears Bailey, Tracy Halloran Pearson, and works created by the Marygrove Dance Department Faculty.
